Tree and Landscape Lighting in Newmarket

Newmarket's older streets west of Yonge and around the downtown have trees that can carry a display on their own. On newer lots the trees are smaller and the work is about giving a front yard some depth.

Two things decide a Newmarket landscape plan: what is growing in the yard and where the power lines run. Streets near Main Street and the established neighbourhoods west of Yonge have maples, spruce and cedar hedges with decades of growth, and some ravine-edge lots back onto woodland. Newer streets in the northeast have younger trees and tidy foundation beds. Both can be lit well.

Trees and conifers

  • Trunk and limb wraps. Tight, even spirals up the trunk and into the main limbs of a mature maple. Striking, and lighter on power and strands than people expect.
  • Spruce and cedar. Lit from the outside of the branches in, so the tree's shape shows at night. Blue spruce and tall cedars are common in Newmarket front yards and reward the effort.
  • Young trees. A loose wrap and a few strands in the crown, tied softly so nothing constricts a growing trunk. Boulevard trees are the Town's, so nothing is fastened into them.

Shrubs, walkways and doors

  • Shrubs and beds. Net lights or wrapped strands sized to each shrub.
  • Walkways. Low stake lights set back from where the shovel and the snowblower go, with connections raised clear of meltwater.
  • Wreaths and garland. On doors, porch columns, railings and lamp posts, lit where the owner wants and hung without drilling.

Overhead lines

The Electrical Safety Authority tells anyone using a ladder or decorating an outdoor tree to check for overhead power lines and stay at least three metres away. On the older streets near downtown, service drops often run through the front-yard canopy. Those trees are lit only below that clearance, or not at all, and you are told which before the quote is final.

Weather

The King Smoke Tree normals show about 27 cm of snow in December and 31 cm in January, with January lows averaging -11.1 Â°C. Strands are tied so a load of wet snow on a spruce does not drag them off, ground connections are lifted on stakes, and walkway lights are placed where the snowbank from the driveway will not bury them. Cold-rated LED strands handle a Newmarket January; old incandescent sets and indoor-only lights do not belong outside.

Frequently asked questions

Do tree wraps damage bark?

Not when done properly. Strands are spiralled and tied with soft ties, never stapled or nailed, and come off in January so nothing restricts growth.

Can you light a tree with a wire running through it?

Only below three metres from the line, which is the clearance ESA asks for. If that leaves too little of the tree, it is left dark and another feature is lit instead.

Will walkway lights get wrecked by the snowblower?

They are placed back from the cleared edge with connections raised, and marked on the plan so you know where they are before the first storm.
