Commercial Holiday Lighting in Newmarket
Newmarket's commercial holiday work comes in three shapes: heritage storefronts on Main Street South, the plazas and offices along Davis Drive and Yonge Street, and condominium corporations that want their entrances and common areas lit as one.
Commercial jobs are quoted from a site visit, scheduled outside trading hours where possible, and documented so an owner, property manager or board can sign off. The installer carries liability insurance, works to Ontario's fall protection rules, and brings in a Licensed Electrical Contractor for any new circuit or outlet.
Main Street South storefronts
The shops and restaurants of Main Street South sit inside the Town's Heritage Conservation District, where signs and new architectural features need a heritage permit and the District Plan discourages anything that hides a historic facade. Seasonal lighting here is done lightly and removably: window outlines, garland on cornices and awnings, lit planters, and wraps on posts the business controls, all on clips and ties with nothing anchored into masonry. Anything permanent, or anything that might be read as signage, is cleared with the Town's heritage staff first. Shops that want to be lit for the Santa Claus Parade in mid-November book in October.
Plazas and offices
- Davis Drive and Yonge Street plazas. Signage bands, canopy fascia, entrance planters and parking-island trees, installed outside opening hours and timed to the plaza's hours.
- Offices and medical buildings. A restrained warm-white treatment at entrances, canopies and front trees suits professional and clinical buildings near the hospital and along the main corridors.
- Permanent options. For a building that wants lighting beyond December, a permanent channel along a parapet or canopy can run holiday scenes, brand colours and community occasions all year.
Condominium corporations
For townhouse and low-rise condominiums, roofs, walls and entrance features are usually common elements. Boards often prefer one consistent design at the entrance sign, the gatehouse planting and the common walkways. The installer quotes the common elements to the board with a written plan and photos, offers a matching option to individual owners where the rules allow it, and supplies a certificate of insurance before work begins.
Power and schedules
Small businesses on the Ontario Energy Board's Regulated Price Plan pay the same time-of-use prices as homes; larger accounts should check their own contract. In both cases displays run on a schedule rather than all night, and LED keeps the running cost low.
Weather and scheduling
Commercial installs are the first to fill the calendar, because a storefront wants to be lit before the mid-November parade and a plaza wants to be lit before the holiday shopping weeks. With November already averaging about 13.6 cm of snow at the King Smoke Tree station, the crew schedules commercial work in late October and early November where it can, with lifts or ladders chosen for the building. Parapet and canopy work on taller plaza buildings may need a lift, which is noted on the quote along with any lane or parking closures the property manager needs to arrange.
January
Commercial displays come down on a date agreed with the property, timed around the weather, and are labelled by location for the next season.
Frequently asked questions
Do you need a heritage permit to light a Main Street South storefront?
Clip-on seasonal lights that come down in January are not addressed by the District Plan and leave nothing behind. Signs, new features and permanent fixtures in public view are a different matter, and the Town's heritage staff are asked first.
Can you install after closing?
Yes. Storefront and plaza work is scheduled early morning or after hours with the owner or property manager.
What does a condo board receive?
A written scope, a plan with photos of each location, a certificate of insurance and a takedown date, so the design can be approved at a board meeting.
