Christmas Light Installation in Main Street South

Christmas light installation in the Lower Main Street South Heritage Conservation District and the older streets around downtown Newmarket.

Newmarket's oldest streets run down the hill along Main Street South toward Water Street, with Cedar Street and the ends of Millard Avenue, Park Avenue, Botsford Street and Timothy Street inside the Town's designated Heritage Conservation District. The houses and storefronts here are brick and clapboard with steep gables, porches, decorative trim and old trees, and the lighting that suits them follows the architecture: gable and porch traced, windows outlined, columns and railings wrapped, the big front-yard tree lit as the centrepiece. Everything is clipped or tied, with no fasteners in masonry. The District Plan exempts electrical equipment from heritage review only when it is out of public view, so permanent lighting on a street-facing facade is raised with the Town's heritage staff before a quote. Overhead service drops are common on these streets, and trees are lit with the three-metre clearance ESA asks for. This is also parade country: the Santa Claus Parade has stepped off at Eagle and Main, and many owners here aim to be lit for it.

Frequently asked questions

Do you work in Aurora and East Gwillimbury?

Yes. Aurora to the south and Holland Landing, Queensville, Sharon and Mount Albert to the north are quoted on the same terms as Newmarket. What changes a quote is the house and the trees, not the town.

Is my house on Newmarket-Tay Power?

If you are in Newmarket, almost certainly. Its licensed area also takes in a strip of East Gwillimbury between Bathurst and Leslie Streets north of town. Elsewhere in East Gwillimbury and in Aurora, check the distributor named on your bill; the OEB sets the price plans either way.

Does the heritage district apply outside Main Street South?

The Lower Main Street South District covers Main Street from the crest of the hill to Water Street, Cedar Street and short sections of Millard, Park, Botsford and Timothy. Aurora has its own heritage rules; the municipality that the property is in is the one to ask.
